Elsie Flemings

Elsie was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2008, the youngest women ever to serve in the Maine State House. As a Bar Harbor resident, Elsie has been actively engaged in community organizing and advocacy, working for economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and social justice. As a member of the Hancock County Democratic Committee, Elsie organized volunteer activities for both the 2004 electoral campaign and the Maine Won't Discriminate Campaign in 2005. Her project on the economic impact of big-box stores led to a law that was signed in 2007, making Maine the first state to require large retail stores to file economic-impact assessments. Elsie serves as an environmental nonprofit representative on the State of Maine's Citizen Trade Policy Commission and on the Board of the Maine Fair Trade Campaign. In her work and life, she is committed to promoting vibrant communities, economic opportunities and fairness, and environmental sustainability in Maine and beyond.
