President

The Opportunity
Emerge America is a national organization with nine state-based affiliate programs that train Democratic women who want to run for public office. Emerge America is the premier training program for Democratic women, inspiring them to run and honing their skills to win. Our goal is clear: to increase the number of Democratic women in public office. The Board of Directors of Emerge America seeks a candidate for the President position who can take Emerge into all 50 states in the next 10-15 years, build a national media presence and substantially grow our existing fundraising base.
The President is a highly-skilled
professional who provides leadership, vision and direction to the national
umbrella organization, Emerge America, Emerge's state Affiliates and Emerge
supporters and alumnae. The President represents the Affiliates to the public,
leads organizational development and strategic planning, optimizes financial
performance, builds donor relationships, oversees personnel and impacts public
perception regarding the importance of women in public office. The President
works closely with Emerge America and Emerge Affiliate Boards of Directors and
Emerge supporters to accomplish the mission and reach the strategic goals set
forth by the Emerge America Board.
The President develops organizational strategy, sound practices and supportive
relationships, both internally and externally, resulting in cooperative and
effective collaborations that further the Emerge mission.

Primary
Responsibilities
Mission
1. Provide oversight of mission
2. Ensure well developed, high-impact, curricula across Affiliates
3. Initiate, encourage and monitor collaboration and cooperation
among Affiliates, and between national organizations and Emerge America
4. Maintain a cutting-edge knowledge of the impact of women on
public policy and politics
5. Convene constituents; host forums to maximize impact
6. Track and document Affiliate effectiveness and impact
Fundraising
1. Raise fundraising budget
2. Develop new sources of revenue
3. Set up and organize fundraising events
4. Hire fundraising consultants where needed
5. Develop and expand lists of potential donors
6. Develop diverse funding streams and long-term plans to best
support the mission and goals of the organization
Finance
1. Oversee and ensure optimal financial performance of Emerge
America
2. Maintain processes for proper record-keeping and internal financial control
3. Develop and manage annual budget
4. Review and report all financial activities to the Board on a regular basis
5. Review analysis of financial activities (income and expense) to discern
trends, identify areas of improvement, address problems and develop forecasts
Public relations/Technology
1. Function as a visible spokesperson for the organization
2. Assist with annual communications plan which includes media preparation/training for staff and key volunteers.
3. Through contracted public relations firm, develop media relations; identify
and maximize appropriate opportunities and communicate the impact of Emerge
America4. Respond to all press
inquiries
5. Oversee and ensure that website is updated in a timely manner
6. Utilize social networking tools such as facebook and twitter to
enhance and broaden the community
Organizational Management Responsibilities
1. Maintain appropriate staffing
structure; oversee recruiting, training, development, and evaluation of staff
2. Guide the strategic planning process with the Board to ensure that the
organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission and toward
which it makes consistent and timely progress
3. Based on the Board's direction and staff input, ensure that the organization
has an annual operations plan that is aligned with its strategic plan. Carry
out plans and document results
Affiliate Relations
1. Participate in monthly affiliate calls
2. Provide advice and guidance where needed
3. Oversee the implementation of yearly convenings
Board Development
1. Work with existing board on developing a board development strategy
2. Provide support where needed to board committees and work with board to
organize four board meetings per year
Position
Requirements
Emerge America is looking for a seasoned professional with a track record of executive level experience who both has vision and the ability to systematically execute on that vision.
This includes substantial management experience, including responsibility for a substantial budget and a minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience.
Candidate will also possess:
- A passion for electing Democratic women to office
- Ability to be strategic
- Ability to motivate and inspire staff and external constituents
- Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and public speaking skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a diverse population
- Dedication to principles of inclusion and collaboration
- A high degree of integrity and professionalism that garners the trust and respect of others
- A record of planning and supporting growth and change
- A professional nature with the ability to meet deadlines and manage conflicting priorities
- Organizational skills with thoroughness, timeliness, and detail when working under pressure
- Prior experience working with and directing the success of a Board of Directors and volunteers
- Desire to shape public issues and enliven public debate
Strong preference
given to those who have established national political fundraising networks and
demonstrated ability to raise substantial funds.
Travel, evening and weekend work are required for this position.
In particular,
this position requires up to 50% travel to visit affiliates and conduct
fundraising meetings and events.
Salary/Benefits: DOE, health care and four weeks of vacation.
